The I statements can be powerful communication tool. This play therapy approach can help children learn to connect emotions with behaviors, and can be a way to help them express assertiveness without causing the listeners to feel blamed, accused, defensive, or guilty. It allows the child speaking (or adults as well!) to express control and ownership of their emotions without directly accusing the other person of being at fault.
A great addition would be the Assertive Communication worksheets, which you can grab by clicking here.
